MEET NINA

(not just) a guide on the Interlaken Walking Tour

The Interlaken Walking Tours were established in 2014 and are part of Outdoor Interlaken. We continue the interview series with Nina!

What is your name and where are you from?

My name is Nina Dürig and I was born and raised in this beautiful region here and live in Unterseen, the town next to Interlaken.

How did you become a guide and then manager at Interlaken Walking Tours?

A couple of years ago I met Viktor at my previous job. When I finished there we met for a coffee and talked about tourism here in Interlaken. Then I started guiding and pretty soon Viktor asked another guide, Melanie, and me if we can help him with the management. The three of us did it for a couple of months and then Viktor spread his wings and became a professional handball player and focussed on other projects so I took over the management.

What is so special about Interlaken?

It’s paradise! Interlaken is just a small town between two beautiful lakes and surrounded by impressive mountains. It has so much to offer and I will never get tired of the beautiful views here!

What is the scariest situation you got yourself into?

Once I was riding my bike with a friend to another friends home. His house is located close to the woods and it is very very very dark at night. Anyway, we were riding our bikes through the darkness and all of a sudden someone jumped out of the bushes screaming and trying to chase us. Our hearts stood still for a moment and we rode as fast as possible since we thought that’s a bad horror movie and we gonna die. We survived and it was only our friends hiding in the bushes to terrify us, must have been hilarious for them….

What do you miss the most when you’re not in Switzerland or back home in Interlaken?

Drinking water out of all taps, fountains, showers etc., CHEESE, the bread, the air, good chocolate and most importantly: it’s so easy to get around, we have an amazing public transportation system and everything is very close and you can just walk or ride your bike 🙂

What is the most memorable expedition you have made?

Hiking through the jungle in Thailand and then going through caves full of bats, big fishes, black toads and one part of the cave looked like it’s full of diamonds but it was actually the sparkling eyes of thousands of spiders. And definitely driving across Australia with my friend Dana in our van 🙂

If you were 80 years old, what would you tell your children?

Hmm.. that’s a hard question since it’s still more than 50 years to go until I’d be 80… I hope I’d be happy and satisfied with my life. I would probably let my children cook me food and spoil me haha! 😉

If you would take a guy on a date and want to show him your favorite spot, where would you go to?

The lake and then get some delicious gelato at one of my two favorite ice cream places in town. When he’s nice enough I would take him to a secret spot at a river in the woods

How old were you when you realised Santa Clause and the Easter Bunny probably never actually knew one another in real life?

Probably quite young, I guess my brother told me to stop putting carrots in front of my door and that our mum or dad is always taking a bite so it looks like the easter bunny really came for a visit. Really really sad though….

What are your plans for the upcoming winter?

I’m going to the states to do a rafting trip through the Grand Canyon for more than 20 days. It’s gonna be epic! That’s the only planned thing so far

What are you known for?

I’m small but I have a very big mouth and can talk way too much!! 😉 And I have a blooming imagination…

How many camels are you worth if you use the camel calculator?

Well.. it seems like I’m a pretty big deal and worth 69 camels, that means 2 more than Timi which is satisfying. 😉

Why is a tennis ball fuzzy?

Haha, thank you Sara!!! In my opinion a tennis ball is just a microcosm full of Roger Federer creatures and they train the whole time and once become his successors. So the tennis ball must be fuzzy that these small creatures are protected from the serve in a tennis game. Makes sense huh?

Thanks for your time what are you off to do now?

I’m starving and will make my way home soon to cook lunch for you and me my dear 😛
