MEET TIMI

Interlaken Walking Tour Guide

The Interlaken Walking Tours were established in 2014 and are part of Outdoor Interlaken. We continue the interview series with Timi!

Previous Interviews:

What is your name and where are you from?

My name is Timothson Peterson, friends call me just Timi. My family originally comes from Sri Lanka, an island at the south tip of India. However I’ve been born and raised in our lovely Interlaken.

How did you become a guide at Interlaken Walking Tours?

Well… some of my friends were already guiding Tours and they asked, if I want to join. Since I’m really into people and I’ve spent my life in Interlaken, it sounded like a great plan to me.

What languages do you speak?

Since Swiss German is a separate language I speak five languages. First Swiss German then German and in school I’ve learned French and English. And not to forget my mother tongue Tamil.

What is so special about Interlaken?

Interlaken is a small town, therefore everyone knows each other. That’s awesome! Whenever I go outside I’m surrounded by friends. On the other hand it is a world hotspot. You’ll always meet new people and get in touch with so many different cultures. And the best part is, Interlaken offers a marvelous nature. You have everything you need: Lakes, rivers, beautiful mountains, enough snow in the winter for skiing and it’s warm enough in summer to hang out at the lakeside.

What is the scariest situation you got yourself into?

Hmm… I’m very organized in my life, but my room is quite a mess. One day I wanted to go to bed then I saw a spider in the corner. One of those big, fat, hairy ones. I tried to get rid of it, but missed it and it hid somewhere in my stuff. Long story short, I took my pillow and went to the living room for the night.

What’s the longest period you’ve been without a shower?

It doesn’t matter how much I do during the semester, most of the learning outcome happens in the week before the finals. Believe me I’ve tried all strategies… In this week every second that is not invested learning is wasted time. And I mean if you’re chilling in your sweater and sweatpants the smell stays inside. At least that was my impression. Longest period was about 3 to 4 days… I’m not proud of it.

If you would take a girl on a date and want to show her your favorite spot, where would you go to?

There is a village called Iseltwald at the lake of Brienz. If you go for a hike there, you’ll get to a mountain peak. It’s quite a steep hike and not well known, therefore you won’t have a lot of people up there. I’ve been up there several times. You can see both lakes, Thun and Brienz, and you are in the middle of the Alps. It’s calm and you won’t get disturbed. Perfect to enjoy the view and for having a nice talk. 🙂

Who would you let punch you directly in the face?

My brother. Probably I even did something to earn it. However he wouldn’t overdo it and cares for me after all.

What do you miss the most when you’re not in Switzerland or back home in Interlaken?

Cheese! We have got the best cheese in the world and whenever I’ve been abroad I had to do a cheese week in Switzerland to get back to normal.

How many camels are you worth if you use the camel calculator?

Haha! We have checked it at the guide meeting and I’m worth 67 camels. 😉

What do you want to be when you’re finished with studies?

I love technology and people. At the moment I work at digitalization projects. It fits very well to my interests. I can work in a dynamic team and I’m close to my interests. I’ll probably stay in this field after my studies.

Who is your favorite Spice Girl and why?

Haha, I couldn’t even name them, but probably the calm, crazy one.

We finish the interview and step outside the office and find a lottery ticket that ends up winning 1 Million $. What would you do?

I’d reinvest it into a company for inflatable unicorn boats, they seem to be a thing nowadays. The rest I’d invest in a beer tab at my favorite pub Hüsi Bierhaus in Interlaken. Free to use for my friends and me.

Thanks for your time, what are you off to do now?

Well, some of my friends of the guide team are waiting in the Hüsi Bierhaus for having a drink. The night is young, let’s see what’s going to happen.
