Swiss National Day

Interlaken, Switzerland

EVENT DETAILS

The Swiss National Day (German: Schweizer Bundesfeier) is the national holiday of Switzerland, set on August 1st. The date refers to a historic alliance concluded in 1291 by the three cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden. This alliance was the focal point around which the Switzerland of today was built over the next 500 years.

Have you ever wondered why Switzerland is ‘CH’? Confœderatio Helvetica is actually it’s official name. This refers back to the way in which the country was constituted, a “confederation”. Helvetica refers to the Helvetii who were the Celtic inhabitants of the country in the old times.

On the day, there is a radio or television broadcast by the President of the Swiss Confederation. Locally there are a huge number of different celebrations. There may be bonfires, fireworks and traditionally decorated streets and buildings. The local bakers produce special bread rolls with small swiss flags on top and it’s not uncommon to see children carrying paper lanterns at night.

Do you yodel? If you’re lucky the local yodelling club will put on a performance with the music of the old times. No matter what, you should always celebrate Swiss National Day with a hearty brunch consisting of pies, smoked sausages, cider and Röschti with bacon!

You could also try and find a Swiss wrestling “Schwingen” tournament where two men basically grab each other’s baggy pants and belts and battle it out on a ring of sawdust.

One of the highlights of celebrating Swiss National Day in Interlaken is the epic fireworks display followed by the lighting of bonfires on the surrounding mountains.
